It can be used topically for any sort of cut, rash,
irritation, abrasion, burn or bruising of the skin. It contains allantoin, which
markedly accelerates cell division rates among fibroblasts, chondroblasts and
osteoblasts, decreasing the healing time of tissue, cartilage and bones. Allantoin is
very penetrating, so even topical application markedly decreases healing time of
internal wounds, fractures etc... Don’t use it on puncture wounds as the accelerated
healing of the wound opening may lead to the formation of an abscess.
Comfrey’s analgesic properties make it a good choice for musculoskeletal pain.
Use a tincture topically. Comfrey has been used historically as an expectorant and its astringent properties were used to decrease mild bleeding in irritated airways.
Its high mucilage content o used historically as soothing remedy for irritated
throats, bowels, bronchi, bladders and mouth wounds

PLEASE READ before purchasing this herb.

Is Comfrey Safe For Internal Use?
There is some concern about the safety of using comfrey internally due to the fact that some comfrey plants contain pyrrolizodine alkaloids (PAs) which have been linked to serious liver damage (veno-occlusive disease). PAs are found in some, but not all, comfrey specimens. David Hoffman in his excellent book Medical Herbalism mentioned four studies that looked for PAs in dried comfrey and none of them ever found any. PAs tend to be more prevalent in the root than in the leaf. They also tend to be more prevalent in the young leaves than in the older, mature leaves. They tend to be a little higher in Russian comfrey than in regular comfrey.
One could, perhaps, reduce the risk of exposure to PAs by using older, mature leaves rather than young leaves or roots. I think we can also say that if one wanted to minimize the risk, one could take some liver- supporting herbs, such as milk thistle, along with the comfrey. I would not ever recommend it be taken internally at high doses or for prolonged periods of time. Don’t use it internally in pregnant women or nursing mothers. Don’t use it in people with liver issues. Don’t use it in people taking pharmaceuticals.
All that said, for it’s tissue-healing properties comfrey generally works as well topically as it does internally. For it’s demulcent effects, it could be easily replaced with marshmallow (Althea officinalis). So internal use isn’t critical to getting great benefit from this plant.

Latin Name: Symphytum officinale
Family: Boraginaceae
Common Names: common comfrey, true comfrey, boneset,
black wort, wall wart, slippery root, knitbone, bruisewort
Parts used: root, leaf
Herbal Actions: analgesic, anti-inflammatory, astringent,
demulcent, emollient, expectorant, vulnerary
Safety: Not safe during pregnancy or lactation.
Contraindicated for people with liver problems.
