Etymology
The term Plantain is derived from the Latin planta which means “sole of
the foot” owing to the leaf’s flatness and shape. Ribwort refers to the
prominent veins (ribs) on the back of the leaves. The word wort is Old
English for plant. So, ribwort is rib plant or the plant with ribs.
Englishman’s footprint (or white man’s footprint as the native Americans
used to call it) is related to the fact that the plant is an invasive species
from Europe and followed the white man wherever he went. The
American Indians didn’t seem to mind as they used the introduced plant
extensively in their own medicines. Interestingly, the Maori of New
Zealand, half a world away from the American Indians, called plantain
Englishman’s footprint as well.
